The apgar scale is used shortly after delivery, about 1 minute after the baby is born. The scale checks the childs physical condition. The infant is given a rating from 0 to 2 in each of these five areas: heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, reflex to stimulation, and skin color. A lower score than 6 to 10 is a sign that the baby needs special medical attention.
